I plead guilty. I favour Heritage . Actually, it's not because of the Fife connection - well not entirely. It's because they are a bit like a greyhound a pal of mine at Cowdenbeath used to own. This dog had a coat of charcoal grey and was called, of course Darkie. While his lean, mean professional rivals were honed to fitness with endless runs round the practice track, Darkie sat on the couch at home and was taken for a stroll round the block when nature called. But when they let him out of the trap at "the dogs", he was in gloryland. The sheer joy of running free and chasing an elusive highly desirable lump of fur had him flying like the wind, and he left the others trailing behind. Every time I've heard Heritage, they've been coming out of the trap, doing their darndest, revelling in their musical freedom, playing and singing to a high professional standard and yet never sounding jaded or super-slick. They're able to do this because they're not part of folk-biz and can afford to defy most of the conventions. For a start, they're a seven-piece group which is virtually unheard of on the professional circuit. Three of the members from the original 1976 band are still there - Jack Beck, George Haig and Lindsay Porteous. Jack is one of Scotland's finest traditional ballad singers who has penned a few songs of his own - his splendid "Tell Tae Me" won the Jack Stuart Memorial Cup in the Kirkcaidy songwriting competition in 1992. But Heritage have always offered something tasty and original on the instrumental side as well, ever since the early days when they took the stage with two fiddles and Lindsay's Jew's harp. Now you can hear autoharp, pipes, keyboards and the Breton bombarde alongside the more familiar instruments of a folk line-up. The sound is rooted in Scotland's rich musical tradition, but it never ceases to carry an air of invigorating freshness. It all adds up to heritage with a capital 'H'.
