Description

This handsome late 19th, early 1900's hatpin is French Jet - a name for black glass used in imitation of the stone Jet. It could well have been a mourning piece. The long 8 3/4 inch pin dates it from a period when hats were large and required longer pins. The top is a cube, a little over 1/2 by 1/2 inch. Each side is topped by 4 pyramid shapes -this makes for an interesting play of shadow and light. I've upped the contrast on the last photo of the cube to show this. This also shows the wavy nature of the glass - another clue that this is an old hatpin. There are some tiny "flea bite chips on the edges and a few small spots of discoloration on the pin shaft.
